11th International Translation Workshop in Bielsko-Biała
18th and 19th October 2014

Information for participants:

Please submit your application to the workshop no later than 3rd October 2014. Send an e-mail to:kopczyk{at}poczta.onet.pl. If anyone wanted to present his / her reflections on translation in the form of a paper, please do write the title and synopsis of your paper on the application form.

Please find the material to be translated below (under the programme).

There is no workshop fee. We do not organize common lunch and accommodation for participants.

Workshop programme

Saturday, 18th October – BIELSKO-BIAŁA (Galeria Wzgórze, Wzgórze 4)
11:00 – opening ceremony of the workshop
11:10–13:15 – short lectures of Slovenian guests and presentations of the participants of the workshop (each presentation 10–15 minutes)

  • Alenka Jovanovski: Poetry and Ethics
  • Dejan Koban: The Young Rhymes project and the Spaces of Poetry Explored by Young Poets
  • Place for the participants’ presentations

13:15–13:30 – translation (group work)
13:30–14:30 – lunch break
14:30–17:00 – translation (group work)

19:00 – literary reading with Slovenian authors (moderated by Agnieszka Będkowska-Kopczyk & Alenka Jovanovski)
20:30 – performance by Dejan Koban: poetry, loud book and musical gloves

Sunday, 19th October – BIELSKO-BIAŁA (Galeria Wzgórze, Wzgórze 4)
10:00–12:30 – translation (group work)
12:30–13:30 – lunch break
13:30–16:00 – translation (group work)
16:00–17:00 – presentation of translations and official closure of the workshop

Instructions on draft translations

  • ZOFKA KVEDER: Please translate five of the first short stories from the book Misterij žene(1900), pages 9–17.
  • SAŠA VEGRI: Please translate poems from the cycles »Ta svet« and »Ljubezen« from the poetry collection Tebi v tišino (2001), pages 37–41 and 15–24, and poems from the cycle Balkon from the collection Zajtrkujem v urejenem naročju (1967), pages 53–61.
  • Attention: more material is published in Saša Vegri’s essay »Jezik je samo eden med komunikacijskimi sistemi« (published in Sodobnost 1977), more Vegri’s poems and a whole book of Zofka Kveder.

Invitation

Polica Dubova Cultural and Artistic Associaton and Univesity in Bielsko-Biała cordially invite you to attend the 11th International Translation Workshop, which shall be again organized as a part of the Golden Boat Festival of Slovenian culture in Poland (Festiwal Złota Łódź / Festival Zlati čoln). The workshop will be held on 18th and 19th October 2014, in the Galeria Wzgórze (ul. Wzgórze 4). The gallery, directed by Mr. Franciszek Kukioła, is located in the heart of Bielsko-Biała.

This year, we shall discuss the texts of Slovenian literary “classics”: writer Zofka Kveder and poet Saša Vegri. In addition to discussions on translations, this years’ workshop will be enriched with lectures on translation topics, such as the problems of translating Slovenian literature into Polish or Polish literature into Slovenian language.

Texts of Slovenian authors, together with other materials, are available on the websiteshttp://www.festiwalzlotalodz.pl and http://www.policadubova.org.

Please prepare a draft translation which shall be discussed during the workshop.

Among menthors invited to the workshop, there are: Bojana Todorović, Katarina Šalamun-Biedrzycka, Maja Novak, Iztok Osojnik, Dejan Koban. Lectures on translatology, literary science and Slovenian literature (also on Z. Kveder and S. Vegri) will be held by reasearchers and translators of Slovenian literature and participants of the workshop.
